Endurance Ride Checklist

START READY ENDURANCE RIDE CHECK LIST
by Kathleen Ratcliff

Although I am new to the endurance riding world, I have a long history of camping with my family and horse back riding. I maintain two subcategories of lists based on what I need to pack and when I need to pack it. Many of the items I use to camp can be packed weeks or months ahead and other items need packing the day of departure. I base my lists on 4 days of travel in a truck with a camper shell pulling one horse in a 3 horse bumper pull trailer. My home for the race weekend is in the trailer.

There are many variation of the lists I have developed depending on the type of rig you own, the number of days you intend to travel and the type of camp lifestyle you and your horse(s) demand. These lists are designed as a general guideline. Modify them as you need to suit your purpose. I have all of my boxes or kits prepackaged in plastic tote bins for easy storage and packing. Many of the kits never need unpacking, just need to be replenished with items used during the race weekend. I have a dry erase board in my trailer I can note items used during the ride that need to be restocked when I get home. During the winter months when the weather is cold and nasty, you can be preparing for a smooth running race season.

I would also like to thank all of you on the PNER Facebook page who contributed to my call for “the one thing at a ride you could not do without”. FINISH PROUD!
