Pacific Northwest Endurance Rides
Convention 2018
Convention is approaching!

Call Eagle Crest at 877-790-6271 for reservations. Request PNER 2018 group block.

Yes, there's a big change in venue for the 2018 PNER Convention! It had been over ten years since the PNER Convention had been held anywhere but Portland. Last year, after the Board of Directors elections, I was asked by several PNER members, adamantly, to change the venue/location, for at least a year. I was given the impression, over and over, that members wanted a change. Historically, the PNER Convention had been held all over the Northwest. One of my fondest PNER Convention memories is when it was held at the Washington State University campus in Pullman, WA. Dennis and Sue Summers shuttled folks from the Spokane Airport, and many members from the outlying areas of PNER were in attendance. We got to tour the WSU Vet School and watch Dr. Sarah Metcalf do a dental on a horse, with color commentary. The kids had a bowling alley and gaming area to play in, as well as a big pool. I went with my Other Mother, Ramona Thacker, and we had a ball. It was well worth the drive over to Pullman that year!

We have some great speakers lined up!

Dr Erica McKenzie, BSc, BVMS, PhD. DACVIM, DACVSMR, of OSU, will be speaking on metabolic issues in our performance horses. Recently she has conducted an Vitamin E/Selenium Study on NW horses. She'll be presenting her findings here.

"Erica McKenzie (BSc, BVMS, PhD. DACVIM, DACVSMR) has been a faculty member in the Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine since 2005. Her activities include the teaching of veterinary students and graduate veterinarians, provision of specialist care to large animals with serious medical problems, and performing research relevant to animal exercise physiology and exercise-induced disease. Dr. McKenzie has authored seven book chapters and over 30 scientific manuscripts relevant to exercise physiology and exercise-related disease in horses and racing sled dogs. She has selected charter status in the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, for which she currently serves as a regent on the Board of Directors and as a national examination committee member. She also serves on the International Committee for the International Conference on Equine Exercise Physiology, which oversees the presentation of cutting edge equine sports medicine research once every four years in different locations around the world, and she acts as an editorial consultant regarding exercise physiology for several scientific journals. Erica also competes as an elite non-professional triathlete and assists coaching of the OSU student triathlon club."

Bruce Worman, Vice President of the American Farriers Association, will be speaking on horse feet! He does a great continuing education seminar out in Idaho, where he and his wife, Nance, live. I asked him to give the seminar here, for PNER members to enjoy!

Matt Slaughter, a Soil Remediation Specialist will be speaking about how to better manage and recover the pastures our horses live in.

Ann Szolas, Certified Barefoot Trimmer and PNER rider, will be presenting a very interesting talk/demonstration on the equine lower limb, complete with a lower limb dissection.

At PNER member's request, I have added several panel/round table discussions that seemed of great interest to our members. The complete list will be made public as soon as I have commitments from all of the panel members I'd like to see on the tables.  At this time, I'm trying to put together panels for discussions on the following topics:

Ride Manager Perspectives
Trail Preservation
Horse/Human Conditioning
PNER - History, purpose, current issues, etc.

Committee meetings will also be held and I strongly encourage PNER members to get involved with a committee that interests them. I see and hear lots about what PNER should and should not be doing in various areas. Now is your chance to make a difference in the organization.
Current PNER Committees are:

Education Committee
Scholarship Committee
Ride Managers
International Committee

A committee that needs revived and needs a chair and panel is the Trails Committee. I've heard plenty about what PNER should be doing about trails, but little about anyone willing to commit themselves to a committee. Here is your opportunity!

There are also some "job openings" coming up in PNER. Again, now is your chance to step up and make a difference in the organization. Please inquire as to how you can help!

This year, the convention will be held at the Eagle Crest Resort, in Redmond, OR. They have promised us some pretty fantastic accommodations. Choices will be a Double Queen Room, a King Suite, or a 2 or 3 bedroom Condo. (I stayed in one back in '99 at the PNER Convention, and I can tell you, they're amazing!)

There are a couple of restaurants within the resort and ample space for our trade show and speakers. As in the past few years, there is a room set aside for the PNER Young Riders and Juniors to have their own space.
